Oh no! You’re enjoying a relaxing evening with your favourite Calon Home candle, and (despite knowing you shouldn’t move a lit candle!) you accidentally spill some wax onto your carpet. It’s more common than you might think, but it doesn’t have to ruin your night. With a few simple tricks, you can get that pesky wax out of your carpet in no time. Let’s dive into some easy steps to tackle this problem. Thankfully your Calon Home candle is made from natural vegetable wax so (amongst other benefits) it has a lower melting point than paraffin or mineral wax so you don’t have to apply too much heat to your carpet fibres.

Getting Started: What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather these household items:

  • Ice cubes or a freezer pack
  • A butter knife or spoon
  • A vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
  • A white cotton towel or brown paper bag
  • An iron
  • Carpet cleaner or dish soap
  • Warm water
  • A clean cloth or sponge

Step-by-Step Guide to Removing Candle Wax from Your Carpet

  1. Pumpkin Spice candleFreeze the Wax: Grab some ice cubes or a freezer pack and place it over the spilled wax. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes to harden the wax.
  2. Scrape Off Excess Wax: Once thewax is frozen, use a butter knife or spoon to gently scrape off as much of the hardened wax as possible. Be gentle to avoid damaging the carpet fibers.
  3. Vacuum the Area: Use your vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to suck up any loose wax particles and debris from the carpet.
  4. Apply Heat to Remove Residue: Place a white cotton towel or brown paper bag over the remaining wax residue. Set your iron to a low heat setting and gently press it over the towel or paper bag for 10-15 seconds. The heat will melt the wax, causing it to transfer onto the towel or paper bag.
  5. Repeat as Needed: Keep applying heat and blotting with a clean section of the towel or paper bag until no more wax transfers from the carpet.
  6. Clean the Carpet: Mix a small amount of carpet cleaner or dish soap with warm water and gently dab the stained area with a clean cloth or sponge. Blot the area with a dry cloth to soak up excess moisture.
  7. Allow to Dry: Let the carpet air dry completely before walking on the cleaned area.

Tips and Tricks for Success

  • Start at the lowest temperature setting (if your iron has one) and test the heat of the iron on a small, inconspicuous area of the carpet before using it to avoid damaging the fibres.
  • If the wax stain persists, repeat the freezing and heat application process until the wax is completely removed.
  • Avoid using coloured towels or paper bags, as the dye may transfer onto the carpet.
  • Take your time and be patient during the removal process to avoid causing further damage to the carpet.

Prevention Tips: Avoiding Future Mishaps

To prevent future candle wax spills on your carpet, try these tips:

  • Avoid moving a lit candle, or one that still has a molten melt pool.  Candles can become warm – especially around the top of the candle glass – and should be left to cool before moving them.
  • Place candles and wax melt burners on stable surfaces away from high-traffic areas or where they may be easily knocked over.
  • Position them out of the way of children and animals.
  • If you are using a pillar candle from another candle company, ensure you use candle holders or trays to catch any dripping wax.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended, especially around children and pets.
