There’s nothing that I love more than strolling along a beautiful Welsh beach with my crazy sprocker spaniel, Roxy. In fact I worked hard for many months to perfect a candle to instantly transport me to the beach and which has since become one of our most popular scents… Rock Salt & Driftwood.

Since relocating back in 2020 from Harlech in beautiful Snowdonia we have since found a hidden treasure trove of stunning beaches nestled along the rugged coastline of West Wales. In this blog post, I invite you to explore with me the ten best beaches in West Wales (in my humble opinion of course!), each with its unique charm and natural beauty.

  1. Barafundle Bay: Often hailed as one of the most picturesque beaches in the UK, Barafundle Bay captivates visitors with its golden sands and

turquoise waters. Accessible via a scenic walk from Stackpole Quay, this secluded gem is a true paradise for those seeking tranquility and natural splendour. You might even forget you’re in West Wales!

  2. Whitesands Bay: Situated near St Davids, Whitesands Bay is renowned for its sweeping crescent of sandy beach and excellent surfing conditions. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and offering breathtaking coastal views, it’s a must-visit destination for surfers, families, and those looking to soak up the beauty of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
  3. Newgale Beach: Stretching for over two miles, Newgale Beach is a paradise for beachcombers and watersports enthusiasts. With its vast expanse of sand, it provides ample space for kite flying, sandcastle building, and even land yachting. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful stroll or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, Newgale Beach has something for everyone.
  4. Mwnt: Tucked away on the Cardigan Bay coastline, Mwnt Beach boasts a postcard-perfect setting. Its horseshoe-shaped bay, backed by rolling green hills, offers a serene retreat. Take a walk up the nearby hill for panoramic views, keep an eye out for dolphins, or simply bask in the beauty of this unspoiled coastal gem.
  5. Aberdaron Beach: Situated on the Llŷn Peninsula, Aberdaron Beach welcomes visitors with its soft sands, clear waters, and charming village atmosphere. Enjoy a leisurely walk along the shoreline, explore the rock pools teeming with marine life, or savor a traditional Welsh ice cream while admiring the stunning coastal scenery.
  6. Poppit Sands: Located near Cardigan, Poppit Sands is a wide and sandy beach, perfect for long walks and family fun. With its sand dunes, shallow waters, and views of the Teifi Estuary, it’s an idyllic spot for picnics, sandcastle building, and paddling in the gentle surf.
  7. Broad Haven: As its name suggests, Broad Haven offers a broad expanse of sandy beach, making it a favourite among families and beach sports enthusiasts. The tranquil waters provide excellent conditions for swimming and kayaking, while the surrounding cliffs and rock formations offer an impressive backdrop for exploration.
  8. Tenby South Beach: The charming town of Tenby is home to the stunning Tenby South Beach, a wide sandy stretch that boasts the iconic pastel-coloured houses lining the waterfront. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the promenade, indulge in some traditional fish and chips, or simply relax on the sands and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of this stunning Welsh beach.
  9. Aberystwyth North Beach: Nestled beside the vibrant seaside town of Aberystwyth, the North Beach offers a mix of sandy shores, pebble banks, and picturesque promenades. Take a ride on the Victorian pier, enjoy an ice cream from the local vendors, or simply sit back and enjoy the sweeping views of Cardigan Bay.
  10. Traeth Llyfn: Hidden away on the St Davids Peninsula, Traeth Llyfn (meaning “smooth beach”) lives up to its name with its serene beauty and untouched surroundings. Accessible via a coastal path and a steep descent, this secluded beach rewards intrepid explorers with its tranquility, pristine sands, and awe-inspiring cliffs.

So that’s my top 10 beaches in West Wales… I’m sure you have others to add. From secluded coves to sweeping sandy shores, these coastal gems provide the perfect backdrop for relaxation, adventure, and appreciation of nature’s wonders.
